Matt, How Important Is Proper Documentation as a Technician?
In this edition of "HVAC Skill Builder," Matt discusses how important proper documentation is as a technician.
Q: How important is proper documentation as a technician? A: It's absolutely important. There's a saying in the business that if you didn't write it, it didn't happen, so when you go out there, you definitely want to cover a few things with the customers. I call them the four Cs of invoice. You want to document the reason for the call, the cause, what caused today's problem, the cure, your options, what you recommend, and identify any code deficiencies. If you find any of that out there, be sure to write that down and get the customer to sign it because if you do not have proper documentation, this could become a liability issue and start costing you, your customers, or your business a lot of money. So again, if you didn't write it, it didn't happen, and the final thought for that will be to always document everything when you go out there to better protect yourself.
