In this edition of “HVAC Skill Builder,” Matt discusses using a micron gauge to improve accuracy.
Matt, how can using a micron gauge improve the accuracy of system evacuation and vacuum processes? Well, micron gauge is a vital tool to determine if in fact you’ve pulled the system down to the microns and needs to go. Typically the industry rule is 500 microns or less. However, if you don’t use a micron gauge and you just put a vacuum on that system, you do not know if the system has in fact pulled down to where it needs to be and you don’t know if it’s sitting there, if you’re losing any of those microns due to a leak or an issue with the hoses. So it is best practice to always use a micron gauge so you know how far down you’re pulling the system and allowing it to sit for 15 or 20 minutes to ensure that there’s no leaking in that system.
