Hey Ed, what’s the difference between Manual J® and Manual JAE®? Manual J®, which is the book that’s right here next to me, is the full version and it has the heavy math in it, which is a good way to describe it. It was written with the intention that computer programs were gonna be made from it, but at the same time this book was published, there was a need for a handwritten version to still be available because they were concerned that not all contractors would use computers. I think that's kind of silly, but in retrospect, we're talking about 2006, so maybe it's not so silly. The abridge addition can be done by pen and paper and is the version that I generally used to teach load calculations because it could be run on a simple spreadsheet. It is not as accurate as the big book, but it's a very good teaching tool. However, it's not gonna be the process that I'm gonna look towards to do a load calculation on a modern home. And that's the way I see it.
