Do I Have To Pay Unemployment?
Question: My business is in California, and I need to know how long I have to fire someone before I have to pay unemployment on them. I have had an employee only a few days and need to fire him, but am weary of the money it will cost me and need to know the best way to do this. Thanks so much!
Answer: Unemployment insurance is generally available only if the employee is terminated through no fault of his or her own. If this is a performance-related termination, the employee is ineligible for unemployment compensation. If the termination is required because of a lack of work or a lay-off, then the employee is eligible for unemployment compensation, subject to other requirements under California law.
