Matt, how does the placement of a thermostat affect system performance and customer comfort?
In this edition of “HVAC Skill Builder,” Matt discusses how the placement of a thermostat can effect system performance and customer comfort.
Matt, how does the placement of a thermostat affect system performance and customer comfort? Well, thermostat placement is very critical. So for example, you don’t want to put a thermostat on an outside wall because you’re going to get false reading from that thermostat. I’ve also seen people put thermostats behind TVs and appliances, and obviously you’re going to get a false reading with that. So it is very important that when you’re installing a thermostat, especially if it’s a new home, you want to put it not on an outside wall. You don’t want to put it behind any type of appliances. You want to put it in the open area that’s not directly exposed to sunlight. And that way you’re going to get a fair balance of temperature, assuming the ducts in the system are correctly sized.
