Hey Ed, Sean Mentions All Filter Manufacturers Recommend 300 Feet per Minute Velocity Through a Filter
In this edition of "Hey Ed," Ed talks about manufacturers' recommending 300 feet per minute velocity through a filter.
Hey Ed, Sean mentions all filter manufacturers recommend 300 feet per minute velocity through a filter. How is it that equipment manufacturers can install a filter in every fan coil cabinet? That is a question that is near and dear to my heart. I don’t want to say anything that is in direct conflict with a question, but I will say that manufacturers are required to follow an ASHRAE standard when it comes to rating the MIRV, which is looking at the particulate size as well as the pressure drop through the filter at one of seven different velocities. So it is not one select velocity such as 300 feet per minute. And I’m not going to say that they’re doing something that shady, but a lot of times they will rate the filters at velocities that are much lower than will ever actually achieve. So the filter looks better on paper than it does in reality. So what I would like to say is anybody who is not exactly on point with what I just said, you should do your very best to get some good education on a properly sized filter. And that’s the way I see it.
