In this edition of “HVAC Skill Builder,” Matt discusses the steps to troubleshoot a heat pump not defrosting correctly.
Matt, what are the steps to troubleshoot a heat pump not defrost incorrectly? Well, some of the steps to troubleshoot a heat pump if it’s not defrost incorrectly is going to be actually evaluating the defrost control board at the unit. You want to make sure that it’s in fact getting the signal to go into defrost. Now, if a system is not going into defrost, typically you’re going to see a unit outside that is covered in ice. And if that’s the case, after you manually jump it into defrost and it still doesn’t defrost, chances are you have a bad defrost control board.
