Matt, how does improper duct sizing lead to airflow issues, and what are the consequences?
In this edition of “HVAC Skill Builder,” Matt discusses the importance of proper duct sizing and how it aids airflow.
Matt, how does improper duct sizing lead to airflow issues and what are the consequences? Well, airflow is very critical to a system and now the way it affects it is if you don’t have enough airflow going across the system or in the evaporator boil or the heat exchanger, you’re going to have performance issues and you’re also going to have either freezing or units tripping out on the high limit. So it is very, very important when you’re going out doing the service call, making call on installation that you’re actually confirming the airflow and checking the static pressure. Now the consequences of that can be all the way from the system, performance issue to total failure of the system, which could be very costly for the homeowner. So if you’re out there talking to homeowner’s identifying airflow issues and offering duct repairs, let them know that this is going to be pretty much the white blood system and if this left untreated to where it’s not operating with enough airflow, you’re going to end up having system performance issues or premature failures with the equipment.
