Matt, how does high static pressure impact system performance and component longevity?

In this edition of “HVAC Skill Builder,” Matt discusses high static pressure and its impact on longevity.

Matt, how does high static pressure impact system performance and component longevity? Well, high static pressure, the analogy is like the blood pressure of the system. But if you have high static pressure, that motor or clover motor in any way is going to have to overcome that resistance to push the air through the system. But it also would result in the evaporator for not getting enough air or the heat exchanger for giving to the furnace. So it is very important that the static pressure is within range according to the OEM specifications. Now, how does that make stuff fail? Again, if you have high static pressure, if you’re dealing with a gas furnace, then if you close the chamber to get too hot and then eventually it could cause the heat exchanger to crack, the opposite would be for the compressor, for example, that if you have high static, the air flows not moved, my coil is at foil, it can cause the refrigerant to actually go back into the compressor as a liquid and eventually washing out the bearings and killing the compressor.
