ACCA wins gold award for advocacy work on behalf of contractors

When it comes to standing up for contractor interests, ACCA represents the gold standard—literally.
In July, ACCA was notified that the association had won a gold award from the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) for its advocacy work on the R-410a equipment ban. The Power of Associations Gold Award from ASAE recognizes ACCA’s outstanding advocacy efforts on behalf of contractors concerning R-410a equipment. The award highlights ACCA’s crucial role in shaping industry policy and protecting the interests of HVACR professionals.
Advocacy that makes a difference
ACCA’s recognition in the advocacy category highlights its successful campaign to secure an extended timeline for the installation of R-410a equipment. Initially, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had ruled to ban R-410a equipment effective January 1, 2025. However, this sudden shift posed significant challenges for the HVACR industry, as the industry was not prepared for the rapid transition to the mildly flammable A2L refrigerants.
The accelerated timeline threatened to disrupt supply chains, result in unsold inventory, and cause financial hardships for contractors.
In response to these concerns, ACCA, in partnership with the Heating, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Distributors International (HARDI) and the Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Contractors of America (PHCC), launched a strategic advocacy campaign. This initiative included filing a petition and mobilizing 230+ members in a letter-writing effort to influence EPA’s decision. As a result, the ban’s implementation was successfully extended to January 1, 2026, providing the industry with critical additional time to adapt.
Impact of the extended timeline
The additional year granted by this extension has allowed HVACR contractors to sell off existing R-410a equipment, avoiding potential losses due to unsold inventory. It also has provided manufacturers with the necessary time to continue production until alternative refrigerants are readily available, thereby preventing a supply chain crisis.
The extended timeline is also vital for training and certification. Contractors now have the opportunity to acquire the necessary skills and certifications to handle A2L refrigerants safely. This preparation is essential for ensuring compliance with new industry standards and avoiding potential legal and safety issues.
The extended timeline also gives contractors more time to educate their customers about the upcoming changes, ensuring a smooth transition to new technologies without compromising business stability or customer trust.
ACCA’s broader impact
By demonstrating a commitment to balancing environmental goals with industry readiness, ACCA has shown how effective advocacy can lead to practical solutions that benefit both the industry and society.
ASAE President and CEO Michelle Mason, FASAE, CAE, praised ACCA for its efforts, noting that associations like ACCA play a crucial role in driving positive change.
“Congratulations to ACCA for exemplifying the impact associations have on the industries and professions they represent, and on society at large,” Mason said. “It’s always so incredibly satisfying to see associations going above and beyond their everyday mission to change the world. We’re very proud to spotlight this award-winning initiative.”
Looking forward
ACCA will be formally honored at the ASAE’s Summit Awards Dinner on Tuesday, September 24, at the National Building Museum in Washington D.C. TAs ACCA continues to champion the interests of HVACR professionals, this award highlights the power of thoughtful, strategic advocacy in navigating the challenges and opportunities facing the industry today.
