Building strong design foundations

These courses break down the ACCA manuals into knowledge you can apply immediately. Each session focuses on one aspect of residential system design, from basic concepts through complete system replacement.
August course lineup
Cooling system fundamentals – August 12: This session covers refrigeration cycles, key components, heat transfer principles, and diagnostic techniques. Learn how cooling systems remove heat and what happens when components fail.
Manual J® load calculations – August 13: Learn the standard method for calculating residential heating and cooling loads. The course covers heat movement, measurement factors, design conditions, and how infiltration affects your calculations.
Heat pump basics – August 14: An overview of heat pump operation based on Manual H®. With more focus on electrification, understanding heat pump systems, operating cycles, and proper application is essential.
Humidity control – August 19: This session explains air-vapor mixtures and humidity’s impact on comfort. You’ll learn key terms like dew point, enthalpy, and relative humidity, plus get an introduction to psychrometric charts.
Manual S® equipment selection – August 20: How to properly size and select equipment based on calculated loads. The course covers acceptable sizing ranges, climate considerations, and how building characteristics affect equipment choices.
Manual D® duct design – August 21: Learn the math behind proper airflow and pressure in residential duct systems. Topics include blower selection, system design principles, and testing and balancing procedures.
Manual T® air distribution – August 26: Learn how to select registers and grilles for proper air throw and spread. This often-overlooked topic covers how to distribute air effectively and avoid common comfort problems. Heating system basics – August 27: This training offers an overview of residential heating systems, fuel sources, venting requirements, combustion air needs, and diagnostic techniques using manometers and multimeters.
System replacement process – August 28: This final session ties everything together, showing how to use Manual J®, S®, D®, and T® for complete system replacement projects from initial calculation through commissioning.
