In this edition of "Hey Ed," Ed talks about Coefficient of Performance (COP).
Hey Ed, what is this COP thing that I keep reading about? COP stands for Coefficient of Performance and it’s a simple metric of work done versus the power consumed. A very basic way to explain it is a heat pump on a mild day might run a COP of three or four to one, meaning you put 100 watts of electric in, it’s going to make three or 400 watts of heat. And if you want to do some math behind that, you throw 3.412 at a watt and that is going to equal how many BTUs are produced. And that’s the way I see it.
