Hey Ed, Does Heat Really Rise?

In this edition of "Hey Ed", Ed discusses if heat really rises.

Hey Ed, does heat really rise? I have family members, mostly nieces and nephews, that if I heard them say heat rises they would get a lecture. Hot goes to cold, that’s the easiest way to explain things. If you want to go back to sixth-grade physics class, hot goes to cold, high pressure goes to low pressure. We often say heat rises and it’s not correct, if you heat air, it becomes less dense/more buoyant, therefore it rises. Same thing when we heat water, when we heat the water it becomes less dense/more buoyant. So that’s the difference between the two. Is it a big deal? Not really, but if we wanna be technically correct when we’re trying to explain things, we should try and be technically correct and that’s the way I see it!
