Hey Ed, What’s the Deal with Rusty Flue Pipes?
In this edition of "Hey Ed", Ed discusses what the deal is with rusty flue pipes when talking about system performance.
Hey Ed, what’s the deal with rusty flue pipes, when it comes to system performance? That is one of those topics that, I’m not gonna say I’m embarrassed about because I learned over the years. If I can go back 30 years ago, I can remember seeing that connectors are part of the venting assembly for fossil fuel piece of equipment that had rust on it, and the way I repaired it was by replacing it with a new piece of pipe. I know, now, that that was not an ideal solution. If you see rust on any venting system it’s an indication of condensation in the vent and if we have condensation in the vent that means we have some kind of a combustion issue and the next thing we should be doing is measuring the pressure of the combustion appliance zone and with that we can come up with some sort of a plan to reduce or eliminate the condensation in the vent which is never supposed to be there and that’s the way I see it!
