Hey Ed, if I Replace My Air Conditioner With a Heat Pump, Can I Use the Current Oil Already in My Furnace?

In This Edition of “Hey Ed,” Ed Discusses if You Replace Your Air Conditioner With a Heat Pump, if You Can Use the Current Oil Already in Your Furnace

Hey Ed, if I replace my air conditioner with a heat pump, can I use the current oil already in my furnace? That's a very interesting question because I'm going to get kind of snarky with the answer. Could you? Yeah, probably. Should you? Absolutely not. Depends on what part of the country you live in and how much code compliancy is taking place at your location. There are going to be some markets throughout the country where it's a hard no. You can't do it because it's not going to be an HRI match and you're not going to be code compliant. So, that's an easy one to answer. If you're in a situation where you have a mechanic that says he can do this and that, make it work. If you want to roll the dice and see if it works, I'm not going to do anything crazy to try and stop you to do it but I would strongly recommend you don't do it. So, that's kind of a really nice way of me saying, yeah, it's a bad idea but hmm could there be dances here and there where it would be permissible? I don't even know if permissible is the right word or not but is it going to happen? Yes. Is there a high probability of potential problems? Yes. So, I guess the answer is no, you really shouldn't do it but if you have to, no, knock yourself out. That's the way I see it.
